Residence and work permits

Foreign citizens who want to live and work in Montenegro are required to obtain permits from the competent authorities. Here, he is primarily thinking about obtaining a residence permit and obtaining a work permit.

This also applies to citizens of the European Union, as well as to foreign citizens from other countries.

A residence permit is a condition for obtaining a work permit. When a foreign citizen receives a work permit, that person can be employed in companies in Montenegro (establishing an employment relationship with a local employer) or be self-employed.

The residence permit is issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, actually by the police station in the place where the foreign citizen wants to reside. The work permit is issued by the National Employment Service, through its branches in cities throughout Montenegro.
